The Mega Evolution Series so far: Mega Evolution, Phantasmal Flames, Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, Pitch Black, 30th Celebration. Overview: how Pokemon TCG sets are organized

The Pokémon Company groups English expansions into series. Scarlet & Violet ran until Black Bolt and White Flare in July 2025. Dexerto, a secondary source, calls that pair "the final set of the Scarlet & Violet era." The Mega Evolution Series started with the Mega Evolution set on September 26, 2025.

Within a series, sets come in two sizes. Collector sites such as PokeCottage describe a main expansion roughly every three months, with "special sets" like Prismatic Evolutions and Ascended Heroes in between. The Pokémon Company doesn't label its sets that way on the official pages, so treat that split as a collector's shorthand, not an official category.

Mega Evolution Pokémon ex are the mechanic that defines this series. Tcg.pokemon.com warns that if one of them is Knocked Out, "your opponent will claim three Prize cards." For collectors, the practical effect is that each set leads with two or three Mega Evolution ex cards, and those are usually what the box art and the chase lists revolve around.

Phantasmal Flames (November 14, 2025)

Over 120 cards, with Mega Charizard X ex on the cover alongside Mega Gengar ex, Mega Heracross ex and Mega Lopunny ex.

Ascended Heroes (January 30, 2026)

The biggest set of the run at over 290 cards. Its page says Mega Dragonite ex leads, and that Trainer's Pokémon and stellar Tera Pokémon ex join the Mega Evolution cards. Collector sites class it as a special set, like Prismatic Evolutions before it.

Perfect Order (March 27, 2026)

Over 120 cards. Mega Zygarde ex leads, with Mega Clefable ex, Mega Starmie ex and Meowth ex named on the page.

Chaos Rising (May 22, 2026)

Over 120 cards. The page names Mega Floette ex as the villain, with Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex and Mega Dragalge ex on the other side.

Pitch Black (July 17, 2026)

30th Celebration (September 16, 2026)

The anniversary set, part of the Mega Evolution Series but built differently: every card in a pack is foil, and each pack has a Pikachu rare. It has over 150 cards, 30 Classic Collection reprints and two Futuristic rares by YOSHIROTTEN, per the official 30th Celebration page. Its main sealed product is covered in our guide to the 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box, its 9 packs and MSRP.

Scarlet & Violet sets still on shelves

The last Scarlet & Violet sets came out in 2025 and still turn up at retail. Their official pages give these dates and counts:

SetEnglish releaseOfficial card count
Prismatic EvolutionsJanuary 17, 2025Over 175
Journey TogetherMarch 28, 2025Over 180
Destined RivalsMay 30, 2025Over 240
Black BoltJuly 18, 2025Over 170
White FlareJuly 18, 2025Over 170

Black Bolt and White Flare launched the same day as a pair. If you are buying sealed product from these sets now, you are buying after the print run's main window, so check dated prices before you pay.

Card Lists and Chase Cards

A set's card list tells you what you can pull; its chase cards are the few that drive the price of packs. For Pokemon TCG sets in the Mega Evolution Series, the chase cards are the special illustration rares and other secret rares numbered above the printed set number.

30th Celebration shows how that works. Its cards print out of 128, so Mew ex 152/128 is a secret rare. The official checklist numbers 158 cards: 18 illustration rares (129 to 146), 10 special illustration rares (147 to 156) and 2 Futuristic rares (157 and 158), plus 30 Pikachu rares inside the main numbering (023 to 052) and 30 Classic Collection reprints listed apart. On October 9, 2026, the most expensive numbered card on TCGplayer was Mew ex 152/128 at $80.61.

Two cautions apply to every set. First, card numbers and rarities differ between the English and Japanese releases of the same cards, so check which release a list refers to. Second, a card can sell for a lot without being on any official list: three "RGB" Mew cards from 30th Celebration did exactly that in September 2026.

Pull Rates by Set

The Pokémon Company does not publish pull rates for English sets. For 30th Celebration it goes further: the official site says its interactive Pikachu feature does "not reflect, affect, or indicate the contents, odds, pull rates, or distribution of cards in any physical Pokémon TCG booster pack."

So any precise rate you see for a set, such as one special illustration rare per so many packs, is a community estimate. Before trusting one, look for three things: a link to the actual opening log, the number of packs it covers, and whether the packs came from one product or many. A rate from a single box is noise.

What sets do publish is pack structure. A 30th Celebration pack holds five foil cards, one of them a Pikachu rare, plus one foil Basic Energy, according to The Pokémon Company's 30th Celebration product showcase. That is a guaranteed rarity per pack, which is why collectors called the set generous. The top comment in a September r/PokemonTCG thread asking for every set to work this way: "Overprint and high hit rates to destroy the stupid investor market and get the cards back into players' hands." Another reply in the same thread asked for something Japan already has: "They should make guaranteed pull rates like in Japan."

We will add a pull-rate guide per set only when a linked, large-sample public opening log exists for it.

Upcoming Sets and Release Dates

The next English set is Mega Evolution Delta Reign, on November 6, 2026. Its official Delta Reign page lists over 135 cards and says Mega Rayquaza ex leads, "inspiring Mega Golurk ex, Mega Malamar ex, and Mega Golisopod ex." It also promises more than 35 Pokémon and Trainer cards with special illustrations.

Prerelease starts early. From October 24, 2026, select Play! Pokémon stores sell the Delta Reign Build & Battle Box, which has a 40-card deck and four booster packs. The prerelease format uses 40-card decks and four Prize cards instead of 60 cards and six Prize cards. Dexerto calls Delta Reign the final main expansion of the Mega Evolution era; The Pokémon Company hasn't said that on its own pages yet.

30th Celebration also has products still to come: the Espeon ex and Umbreon ex battle decks on October 30, 2026, the Ultra-Premium Collection, Ditto Premium Collection and Figure Collection on November 6, 2026, and the Binder Collection on December 4, 2026.

Analysis: what the release pace means for buyers

Two things follow from the dates above. First, a new English set lands about every two months, so the window in which a set is "new" is short. Delta Reign arrives seven weeks after 30th Celebration. Prices on a set's sealed product and chase cards tend to move most in that window, which is why we date every price we print.

Second, the official card counts vary a lot: from over 115 cards for Pitch Black to over 290 for Ascended Heroes. A bigger set spreads the same number of packs across more cards, so a complete set takes longer to build. Check the official count before you start a master set, and remember the pages give rounded numbers.

Card counts also hide the structure. 30th Celebration has over 150 cards but only 12 chase cards above the set number, plus a separate Classic Collection that isn't legal in tournaments. The card list article for each set is where that detail lives.

Our take

This take uses only the official dates, counts and statements cited above. If you collect English Pokemon TCG sets, the release pace is the thing to plan around, not any single set. Seven Mega Evolution Series sets in about a year means a budget spread across all of them gets thin fast. Pick the sets you care about, buy their sealed product near MSRP (our Pokemon TCG products guide compares the cost per pack), and buy singles for the rest. Ignore pull-rate claims that don't link their data, because there is no official number to check them against.
