Mega Evolution Chase Cards, a Year On: Gold Fell, Box Rose
Thirteen months after release, every Mega Evolution chase card we tracked is cheaper than it was a month after launch, the gold ones most of all. The sealed Booster Box went the other way, and that changes what opening one is for.

Mega Evolution chase cards lost 33% to 65% of their TCGplayer price in a year, while the set's Booster Box gained 19%, to $302.17 on October 27, 2026.
If you're weighing packs against singles for this set, that split is the story. The ranking below is by today's market price. The rest follows TCGplayer's one-year price history from the week of October 27, 2025, a month after the September 26 release, so release-week prices aren't in it.
Four Megas sit above $150, and the gold Lucario still leads

The English set has 188 cards, 132 in the main list and 56 secret rares, and it combines two Japanese sets, Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia, according to Bill's Archive. The blurb on Pokémon's set page names two Pokémon, Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex, and those two hold the top four spots, each in a gold Mega Hyper Rare and a Special Illustration Rare. Those four add up to $687.69 of the $1,279.33 that all 56 secret rares sum to, 54%.
Below them the drop is steep. Mega Venusaur ex is the last card over $100, Mega Latias ex the last over $60, and the lowest SIR, Lt. Surge's Bargain, is $12.93. No Ultra Rare beats $18.93 (a Lillie's Determination full art) and no Illustration Rare beats Bulbasaur's $16.70. Our Mega Evolution set page lists every card by rarity; this ranking is by price alone.
The Booster Box is the one product here that rose
From the week of October 27, 2025, the first in TCGplayer's one-year window when we read it on October 24, to today:

| Mega Lucario ex 179 (SIR) | $265.75 | $161.91 | -39% |
| Mega Gardevoir ex 178 (SIR) | $245.63 | $165.04 | -33% |
| Mega Venusaur ex 177 (SIR) | $180.97 | $111.80 | -38% |

The box didn't rise in a straight line. It bottomed at $228.70 in the week of December 8 and peaked at $342.80 in the week of May 18. That peak rests on just 3 sales, but the week before sold 12 at $342.68, so the high holds up. Today's price is 12% under it. These numbers are for the regular Booster Box; the Enhanced Booster Box, a separate product, had a market price of $294.91 on October 27.
The cards went the other way. Venusaur's SIR had a run to $189.29 in mid-June, above where it started, then gave it all back and more: at $111.80 it's at its lowest weekly price in the window. Neither gold card got back near where it started, and both are at their lowest price in the window this week too, though on only 2 and 4 sales in a week that began on October 26.
A dearer box makes chasing one card worse. Pokémon's product showcase puts 36 packs in a Booster Display Box, so $302.17 is $8.39 a pack. TCGplayer's Authentication Center opened more than 5,000 packs and counted a named SIR in 1 in 1,008 and a named gold card in 1 in 2,520. At $8.39, that's about $8,460 and $21,150 of packs on average, 51 times the Gardevoir SIR and 102 times the gold Lucario. It's the same arithmetic we ran in our Chaos Rising chase-card ranking, and our Mega Hyper Rare pull-rate comparison has the gold rates for every Mega set, with SIR rates across seven sets in our Special Illustration Rare pull-rate guide. A year ago the box cost $48 less and the cards cost more.
The Gardevoir SIR now costs more than its gold card
In the first week of the window the gold Lucario was priced at 2.01 times its SIR and the gold Gardevoir at 1.79 times. Today it's 1.28 times for Lucario. For Gardevoir the order has flipped: the SIR was priced above the gold card in the weeks of October 12, October 19 and October 26, the only three of 53 weeks where that's true. The gold card sold 8 and 12 copies in the two finished weeks and 4 so far in the third, so read it as a short run on thin sales rather than a settled turn.

Lucario had its crossing in May. On May 13, u/numbrexri posted on r/PokeInvesting (2 points when we read it on October 27): "Based on tcgplayer, this card is soon about to be worth more than the gold card lucario." It was, that same week, with the SIR at $243.70 against $230.68, and again the week after. The top reply, from u/B-Rayy06 (comment, May 13, 6 points on October 27), was blunter: "Gold cards are super mid and people have been trying to pretend people care about cards being hard to pull since the Mega block started." The gold card went back on top in the week of May 25 and has stayed there, but the gap today is $45.54, down from $267.63.
The slide was already visible in December. On December 14, 2025, a post by u/College_Sudden (the account now shows as deleted) asked r/PokeInvesting whether to sell a gold Lucario they'd pulled but didn't like, since "the price dropped from almost $600 to only $340 now." The top reply leaned toward selling.
"All of the Mega golds are crumbling in price," u/kingjoeg wrote (comment, December 15, 3 points as of October 27), adding that "Mega SIRs are much nicer than the gold cards." The price record agrees with them. From the week they posted to today, the gold Lucario fell 36% and the gold Gardevoir 46%, while the Lucario and Gardevoir SIRs lost 13% and 16%. At $207.45, the card priced at $340 in that post is down another 39%, about $133.
Open the box for the packs and buy chase cards as singles
Buy the Mega Evolution Booster Box only if you want to open 36 packs at $8.39 each, and buy any chase card you want as a single. The box is the one product here that gained over the year, while each of the top five cards inside it lost close to a third of its price or more. Averaged over many boxes, the ten SIRs and two gold cards are worth about $30.35 of each $302.17 box at today's prices, about 10%, and a box has about a 30% chance of holding any SIR and 2.8% of any gold card.
Between the two Gardevoirs, the gold card is now $11.75 cheaper and 2.5 times rarer to pull. Take the gold if scarcity is the point and the SIR if the art is. For Lucario the gold card still leads by $45.54. If you already own a gold card, both are at their lowest price of the year on thin sales, and nothing in the record says when that stops, so keep or sell it on whether you like the card.
What would change our mind: the Booster Box falling back under $254, its price in late October 2025, which would make opening cheaper than it's been all year, or either gold card's weekly price rising two weeks in a row on more than its current 4 to 12 sales a week. To mark off the ones you already own, use our Mega Evolution checklist.
