Mega Hyper Rare Pull Rates: About 1 in 1,000 Packs, 6 Sets

Six counts, eight gold cards and one honest number: about a thousand packs per hit. The gaps between sets look like luck, and the singles cost a fraction of the chase.

Our read

The per-set differences are inside each count's own margin. Treat every set as roughly 1 in 1,000 and don't open packs for the gold card.

The eight gold Mega Hyper Rare cards from six Mega Evolution sets in two rows: Mega Gardevoir ex, Mega Lucario ex, Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Charizard Y ex, Mega Dragonite ex, Mega Zygarde ex, Mega Greninja ex and Mega Darkrai ex

Mega Hyper Rare pull rates, pooled across TCGplayer's six Mega Evolution counts, come to about 1 in 1,077 packs, though with only about 26 hits behind it the real rate could sit anywhere from roughly one in 780 to one in 1,750. Our call: buy the gold card you want as a single, and don't open packs for it.

The per-set figures run from 1 in 540 for Ascended Heroes to 1 in 1,786 for Perfect Order, and TCGplayer's own margins overlap across all six.

Mega Hyper Rare pull rates by set

Each of these six Mega Evolution sets has one or two Mega Hyper Rares, the gold cards with the four-pointed star. In each of the six TCGplayer tables, it's the rarest row by a wide margin: Special Illustration Rares in the same tables run 1 in 70 to 1 in 101. The rarity itself is explained in our Pokémon card rarity symbols guide.

TCGplayer didn't soften it when the rarity arrived. Its Mega Evolution count calls the new cards "next to impossible to pull" and works out an average of 35 booster boxes before your first one. Getting both of that set's gold cards takes 3,750 packs on average, by the same article's math.

Do the counts agree?

Yes, closely enough that we'd treat them as one number. We pooled the six by weighting each rate by its pack count: about 26 hits implied by the published rates, in 28,000 packs, or 0.093%. With so few hits, that pooled rate has its own 95% range of about 0.057% to 0.129% a pack (our normal approximation). Using TCGplayer's "1 in" figures instead of the rounded percentages gives 0.094%, so the rounding doesn't move it. Every one of the six 95% intervals contains that pooled rate. That's our reading, not TCGplayer's, but TCGplayer said the same about Chaos Rising when it came in better than Perfect Order and Phantasmal Flames: "the difference is not statistically significant. Odds are that we were simply more lucky with our pulls this time around."

Ascended Heroes is the one that looks generous, at 1 in 540. It also rests on the smallest sample of the six, 2,000+ packs, with the widest margin, plus or minus 0.18 points. Read it as "maybe a bit better, maybe not."

Two pages also disagree with themselves. Perfect Order's table and text say 1,786 packs, while its section heading says 1,260. Pitch Black's tables say 1,081 packs and its text says 1,111. Neither changes the picture; they're a reminder that at about one hit per thousand packs, a count of a few thousand packs finds only a handful of cards. Pack counts are TCGplayer's minimums ("more than"), so our pool is approximate too.

Our verdict on Mega Hyper Rare pull rates: buy the single

Plan on about 1 in 1,000 packs for any Mega Hyper Rare, in any Mega Evolution set, and buy the one you want as a single. The set-to-set gaps are within each count's own margin, so no set is the "easy" one to open for. Open packs for the Special Illustration Rares and the rest of the set, at 1 in 70 to 1 in 101 for an SIR, and count a gold card as a bonus.

If you're weighing Delta Reign on November 6, TCGplayer's preview expects its gold Mega Rayquaza ex to be the set's second most valuable card, behind the Special Illustration Rare of the same Pokémon. There's no count for it yet. Our Delta Reign price-per-pack breakdown has what the boxes cost before release.

What would change our mind

  • A count clearly outside the pool. If TCGplayer's Delta Reign count comes in with an interval that leaves out the pooled rate, that set really is different, and we'd say so.
  • Singles priced like the odds. If a gold card's market price climbed to within a few times its expected pack cost, opening would stop being the worse deal. On October 19 the closer of the two we priced, in the cost table below, was 40 times.
  • A real measure of spotting. A grader or retailer publishing how often gold cards arrive speckled would change the condition advice, in either direction.

What chasing a Mega Hyper Rare costs in packs

At October 19 market prices, opening for one costs 40 to 94 times the single. We priced two of the eight cards, the two with a dated TCGplayer reading in our price files:

Expected cost isn't what any one person pays; it's the average. So here's the spread, at the pooled rate. An Elite Trainer Box's 9 packs give you a 0.8% chance of at least one. A booster box's 36 give you 3.3%. Six boxes, 216 packs, get you to 18%, and you'd need 746 packs for even odds. Our Perfect Order Mega Zygarde ex page runs the same math for that card, and the pull rate calculator does it for any pack count.

Luck does land in clumps. In July, u/Cold-Technology6271 posted two Mega Darkrai ex in two days from "a few booster boxes" and some bundles. That's one opener's report, not a better rate; 28,000 counted packs outweigh it.

What collectors say about the gold cards

The cost argument has already reached at least one chaser. In September, u/Rybur525 (1 point) described buying Phantasmal Flames and Mega Evolution packs every week for the gold cards and concluded: "I think I will quit and just save up to by them from now on." The table above agrees. At Pitch Black's rate, the packs behind one gold card add up to about 30 booster boxes.

The louder thread is about condition. A September 12 post by u/Taway2942 (549 points) showed spots on a gold card and predicted: "The value of these cards are going to tank in a few years if they all degrade like this." We can't back the prediction. No source we found measures how many gold cards spot, and the two causes offered in the top replies, humidity and the UV ink, are guesses; one of them calls itself one. The top reply, from u/no507 (199 points), was a photo of a speckled Mega Lucario ex 188:

Not everyone sees damage. u/Unlucky-Wolf4236 (115 points) replied: "Honestly looks kinda cool. I’m definitely not buying gold cards tho." Both halves of that line point the same way for a buyer: if you want one, buy it as a single, and ask for close photos of the gold surface first. Our card condition guide covers what to check in a seller's photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mega Greninja ex Mega Hyper Rare pull rate?

TCGplayer's Chaos Rising count, from more than 8,500 packs, put Mega Greninja ex at 0.10% a pack, plus or minus 0.07, or 1 in 956. It's the only Mega Hyper Rare in Chaos Rising, so that's also the rate for the card itself. TCGplayer called the better-than-usual figure luck rather than a real difference, and we'd plan on the six-set pool of about one in a thousand.

What are the odds of pulling Mega Dragonite ex Mega Hyper Rare?

About 1 in 1,080 packs of Ascended Heroes, by TCGplayer's count of more than 2,000 packs (0.09% a pack, plus or minus 0.13). Ascended Heroes has two Mega Hyper Rares, Mega Dragonite ex and Mega Charizard Y ex, so any gold card there came 1 in 540. That count is the smallest of the six, so its margin is the widest.
