How we got these numbers

  • Release date: July 17, 2026 in English, from The Pokémon Company's press schedule.
  • Card count: official checklist (PDF); api.tcgdex.net. The card list is imported from the TCGdex API with our own script, matched to the official checklist's numbering, and each rarity's count is checked against a second source (the checklist or the pull-rate article).
  • Pull rates: TCGplayer Authentication Center opened 4,000+ packs and reports each rate with a 95% confidence interval. The ± is that interval: with a bigger sample it gets narrower. We copy the rates as published and do not adjust them.
  • Products: pack counts from pokemon.com product pages; MSRPs from the sources named in the table, each marked official, retail listing or secondary source.

Our take

Going by TCGplayer's 4,000+ packs, Pitch Black opens like the Mega Evolution sets before it: a Double Rare about 1 in 5 packs, an Illustration Rare about 1 in 9 and a Special Illustration Rare about 1 in 80. The Mega Darkrai ex Mega Hyper Rare is the long shot: 0.09% per pack with an interval as wide as the rate, so read 1 in 1081 as a rough size, not a promise. A specific Special Illustration Rare is about 1 in 480 packs, so price that many packs against the single before you chase one named card.
