Pokémon Master Set Cost: 7 Mega Evolution Sets Ranked
We priced every card and every reverse holo in the seven English Mega Evolution era sets on one day, under one rule. The reverse holos barely move any bill. The secret rares are nearly all of it.

The cheapest Pokémon master set of the Mega Evolution era is Chaos Rising: 198 English cards with a TCGplayer market total of $452.70 on October 26, 2026.
Ascended Heroes, the dearest, costs almost nine times that. If you're picking a set to finish, or pricing the one you've started, we used one rule for all seven: every card on Pokémon's numbered checklist once, plus every reverse holo, at the Near Mint market price. No promos, no stamped variants, no Basic Energy.
Chaos Rising is the cheapest master set and Ascended Heroes costs almost nine times as much

Every price is TCGplayer's market price for an English Near Mint single, read one card at a time between 02:20 and 02:48 UTC on October 26, before shipping. All seven together came to 1,890 cards and $8,444.23. We read every price again on October 28, the day this went up: all seven totals were 1.1% to 4.8% lower and in the same order, from Chaos Rising at $442.54 to Ascended Heroes at $3,865.76.
1. Chaos Rising: 198 cards, $452.70
The 36 secret rares come to $418.96, 92.5% of the total, and Mega Greninja ex 122/086, a Mega Hyper Rare, is a quarter of it alone at $114.20. The 162 other cards cost $33.74. Cardrake's count agrees with ours, 86 main-set cards plus 76 reverse holos plus 36 secret rares. Our Chaos Rising checklist has the 122 numbered cards to tick off, and the Chaos Rising chase cards cover the top end.
2. Perfect Order: 203 cards, $469.58
Five more cards than Chaos Rising for $16.88 more. No Perfect Order card was above $90: Mega Zygarde ex 124/088 led at $88.01, 18.7% of the bill, so no single card decides whether you finish this one.
3. Pitch Black: 194 cards, $566.10
Mega Darkrai ex 116/084, a Special Illustration Rare, is $143.73 of it, 25.4%. Pitch Black is also the set where the trackers disagree by one card; more on that below.
4. 30th Celebration: 158 cards, $641.85
Here the master set and the complete set are the same thing. Pokémon says "every card in a 30th Celebration booster pack is foil", and its checklist marks the whole list as "standard set foil", so there's no separate reverse holo to collect. It's also the flattest bill: Mew ex 152/128 leads at $84.83, 13.2%, while the 30 secret rares share $586.91. We left out the three RGB Mew cards, which aren't on Pokémon's 30th Celebration checklist and cost $3,581.00 to $4,278.49 each, and the 30-card Classic Collection, $820.14 on its own. The 30th Celebration card list explains both.
5. Phantasmal Flames: 214 cards, $993.81
One card is 60.1% of this master set. Mega Charizard X ex 125/094 had a market price of $597.46, and the other 213 cards together came to $396.35, less than all of Chaos Rising. Of the seven, it's the clearest case for buying the top card as a single before anything else, because the rest of the set is cheap.

6. Mega Evolution: 310 cards, $1,356.30
The first set of the era has the longest list of the plain-reverse sets: 132 main-set cards, 122 reverse holos and 56 secret rares, the same 310 that Cardrake gives. Those 56 cost $1,300.23. Mega Lucario ex 188/132, a Mega Hyper Rare, led at $212.23, 15.6% of the bill. The Mega Evolution chase cards rank the rest of the top end, and our Mega Hyper Rare pull rates cover why the gold cards are the hard ones to pull.
7. Ascended Heroes: 613 cards, $3,963.89
This one doubles its own size. Coded Yellow describes "two Reverse Holo cards for every regular Pokémon rather than the usual one": an Energy symbol version plus a ball or Team Rocket version. That's 280 pattern reverse holos, plus 38 plain ones on the Trainers and Energy, 318 in all for $92.08, 2.3% of the bill. The 78 secret rares carry $3,792.88, and Mega Gengar ex 284/217 alone is $736.25. A 613-card set needs 35 double-sided nine-pocket pages; our Ascended Heroes pull rates cover the odds behind its secret rares.
The counts disagree because trackers count different cards
Double Holo's master set table, dated October 26, lists Chaos Rising at 122 cards (111 of them priced) and $434, which is the complete set with no reverse holos at all. The same table puts 30th Celebration at 191 cards and $12,543, and Cardprice gives 161 cards and $12,543.07; both totals include the RGB Mew. Double Holo counts Pitch Black at 193 where PokéCottage and we count 194. TCGdex lists 123 reverse holos for Mega Evolution; TCGplayer sells 122.
We lead with Pokémon's own numbered checklist plus the reverse printings TCGplayer actually sells, because that's the list a binder follows. One trap is on TCGplayer itself: 105 Ascended Heroes cards with pattern versions still carry a plain reverse holo listing, and 89 of those sold no Near Mint copy in the 30 days to October 26. Count them and the set reads 718 cards. Nobody publishes print runs, so none of these sources can say which cards are actually short.
Our read: reverse holos add over 60% more cards and about 4% or less of the cost
In the five sets with a plain reverse holo, that layer adds 62% to 65% more cards to the complete set and 1.8% to 4.0% of the master set's cost. Mega Evolution's 122 reverse holos, the biggest plain layer, total $30.69. The priciest plain reverse holo in the five sets was Pitch Black's Bastiodon 062/084 at $0.81, and each set's median ran $0.21 to $0.24.
They cost about what the main set does. Chaos Rising's 86 main-set cards came to $15.55 and its 76 reverse holos to $18.19. So in these five sets a master set has over 60% more cards than a complete set and costs only about 2% to 4% more.

The secret rares, the cards numbered above the printed set count, are where the money sits: 91.4% to 95.9% of every bill, and across all seven sets together 16% of the cards and 95% of the cost. Take them out and six of the seven master sets cost $33.74 to $56.07. TCGplayer says a Direct package over $50 ships free in the US "no matter how many cards you buy or how many sellers you buy from", and charges $3.99 below that. Without their secret rares, the 30th Celebration, Mega Evolution and Ascended Heroes lists already clear that line, while the other four fall $9 to $16 short, and only copies sold through Direct count toward it.

Our verdict: choose a master set by its secret rares
Pick a master set by what its secret rares cost, then buy the main set and the reverse holos as singles, because in six of the seven sets that whole layer was $34 to $56 on October 26. On that rule, Chaos Rising and Perfect Order are the cheapest finishes, both under $470. Phantasmal Flames is a one-card decision, and Ascended Heroes is a different hobby budget at almost $4,000.
What would change our mind: a set whose reverse holos carry their own chase. Master Ball Pattern reverse holos had a $9.24 median in our reverse holo price check, and a layer like that would turn the reverse holos from a rounding error into a real line in the budget.
How collectors reacted: about 600 packs for a $453 set
On August 25, u/unreadpeak3401 posted "FINALLY finished Chaos Rising Master Set! Every hit I’ve pulled since the set came out." to r/PokemonTCG (244 points as of October 26). Asked how many packs it took, they answered "A lot. I don’t know the exact number", then listed "at least 8 ETBS, 4 Booster Boxes, a hand full of the mega Greninja ex boxes, and more checklanes and blisters than I can count." That reply had 55 points as of October 26.
When another commenter guessed 350 packs, the poster put it "closer to 600-700". At Chaos Rising's loose-pack market price of $5.59 on October 26, 600 packs is about $3,350, 7.4 times the $452.70 the finished set costs as singles. Their reasons for ripping anyway are fair ones, the fun of the pull and not wanting to "worry about buying fakes", and the fake risk sits on exactly the cards worth faking; our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards covers those checks.
u/cj4k's reply had 60 points as of October 26: "Bro you could open 1-2 booster boxes and have 97% of the cards. Just buy the singles you’re missing, would save a ton of money". The advice holds in spirit, but 97% is too generous for a master set: the 36 secret rares alone are 18% of the cards and 92.5% of the cost, so "most of the cards" and "most of the money" are two different finish lines.
