Is 30th Celebration worth opening?

What opening 30th Celebration returns, product by product, from TCGplayer's measured pull rates (3,000+ packs, published September 24, 2026) and the TCGplayer market price of every hit card on October 12, 2026. A pack holds $7.20 of hit cards on average, before fees. After a 13.25% selling fee, 5 of 6 products with a sourced MSRP return more than they cost at MSRP, and none of the 7 return more than their own market price. Commons, uncommons, rares and reverse holos count as $0 unless you change that in the calculator.

The answer by product

Net EV is after a 13.25% selling fee with bulk at $0. ROI compares it with the cost; break-even is the share of 20,000 simulated openings worth at least the cost.

Why the answer is usually no

7 of 7 products return less than their market price after fees. The closest is the Booster Bundle: $37.48 expected back against $73.92, −49%, and 15% of 20,000 simulated openings broke even.

The value sits in a few cards. Classic Collections are 37% of a pack's expected value, at 10.15% a pack and $25.95 on average per card. Most openings miss them, which is why the typical (median) opening returns less than the average.

At MSRP the answer changes: the Elite Trainer Box (+12%), the Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box (+15%), the Ditto Premium Collection (+25%), the Ultra-Premium Collection: Day (+1%), the Ultra-Premium Collection: Night (+1%) return more than their list price on average. Sealed product at MSRP is hard to find, and even then 45% or fewer of simulated openings broke even.

How we calculate

  • EV per pack = sum over each measured rarity of (rate per pack × average price of the cards in that rarity). A card without a price counts as $0.
  • EV of a product = EV per pack × booster packs in it. Promos, dice, figures and the box itself are not counted.
  • Net EV = EV × (1 − selling fee) + bulk value per pack × packs.
  • ROI = net EV ÷ cost − 1. Pay at most = net EV: the price at which the expected return equals the cost.
  • Break-even chance = share of 20,000 simulated openings (fixed seed) whose net value is at least the cost.

Assumptions

  1. Each measured rarity is drawn independently in every pack, and every card of a rarity is equally likely. TCGplayer makes the same assumption for its odds of one named card.
  2. Only the rarities TCGplayer measured count. Commons, uncommons, rares, reverse holos, energy, code cards and promos are bulk, $0 by default (the conservative case); the calculator lets you set a value per pack.
  3. Cards sell at their TCGplayer market price (Near Mint) on October 12, 2026. Selling dozens of cards takes time and prices move, most of all in the weeks after a release.
  4. The default fee is eBay's 13.25% final value fee for trading cards. Per-order fees ($0.30 to $0.40 on eBay, $0.30 on TCGplayer), shipping and tax are left out, so the real return is a little lower.
  5. Rates are measured on a sample and carry an error. The low and high EV use the ends of TCGplayer's 95% confidence interval for every rarity at once; the simulation uses the central rates.
  6. Every pack has one Pikachu Rare, so it adds its average price ($0.77) to each pack.
  7. RGB Rare has no measured rate, so it is not in the EV. TCGplayer found no RGB Mew in its 3,000+ packs, so it gives no rate. The three RGB Mew cards are not on the official checklist.
  8. Boxes that also hold a different pack (the Classic Collection pack in the Ultra-Premium Collection) count only their regular booster packs.

Why our number differs from other sites

worththerip.com puts the expected pulls of a 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box at $76.81 against a $141.41 price, with a 9% chance it pays for itself (read October 12, 2026). Our EV for the same box is $64.80 before fees and $56.21 after.

Here the rates are close: worththerip uses two community samples of 652 and 420 packs (a Special Illustration Rare about 1 in 18, a Classic Collection card about 1 in 10), TCGplayer measured 4.88% and 10.15% over 3,000+ packs. The rest of the gap is the plain holo Rare and the commons, which worththerip prices and we count as $0, and the date of the card prices.

Our take

At MSRP most 30th Celebration products return a little more than they cost on average after fees, +12% for the Elite Trainer Box, yet fewer than half of simulated openings broke even. At the market prices of October 12, 2026 none comes close: the same Elite Trainer Box costs $139.22 and returns $56.21 after fees, −60%. Classic Collection cards and Special Illustration Rares hold 68% of a pack's value, and most openings miss the expensive ones. If you paid MSRP, opening is a fair gamble; at market price, keep it sealed or buy the card you want.

FAQ

Is a 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box worth opening?

On average a 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box holds $64.80 of hit cards, $56.21 after a 13.25% selling fee (card prices of October 12, 2026). At its $49.99 MSRP that is +12%, and 42% of simulated openings broke even. At its $139.22 market price on October 12, 2026 it is −60%, with 8% breaking even.

What is the expected value of a 30th Celebration booster pack?

$7.20 in hit cards before fees, from TCGplayer's measured rates and card prices on October 12, 2026. Using the low and high ends of the rates' 95% intervals gives $6.36 to $8.04. Bulk cards are not included.

What are the odds a 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box pays for itself?

In 20,000 simulated openings after fees, 8% returned at least the $139.22 market price and 42% returned at least the $49.99 MSRP. The median opening returned $38.15; one in ten returned more than $124.63.

Why does the EV leave out commons, uncommons and reverse holos?

TCGplayer measured rates only for the hit rarities, and bulk sells for little after fees and shipping. We count it as $0 so the number is a floor; set your own bulk value per pack in the calculator. The biggest single card here is Lugia (CC 029) at $178.01 on October 12, 2026.
